“IP65” appears on nearly every industrial display datasheet — and is one of the most misunderstood specs in kiosk procurement. Buyers either overpay for protection they do not need, or discover too late that the “waterproof” screen they bought was only protected on paper.

What the Two Digits Mean
The IP (Ingress Protection) code has two digits:
- First digit — solids (dust): ranges 0–6. “6” means dust-tight: no ingress of dust, complete protection against contact.
- Second digit — liquids (water): ranges 0–9. “5” means protection against water jets from any direction — the screen survives direct spraying and heavy splashing, but not immersion.
So IP65 = completely dust-tight + survives water jets. It is the workhorse rating for public-facing equipment.
The Critical Detail: “Front Panel” vs the Whole Unit
Here is what catches buyers out. Most kiosk displays are rated IP65 on the front panel only — the exposed glass and bezel. The rear (electronics, connectors, ventilation) is typically IP20 or similar, because it lives inside your enclosure.
This is not a trick; it is the correct engineering for panel-mounted equipment. But it means:
- The seal between display and enclosure is your responsibility. The display’s front gasket must be compressed correctly against your cutout. A perfect IP65 display installed with a 1 mm gap is an IP-nothing installation.
- “Waterproof kiosk” claims need scrutiny. Ask whether the rating covers the complete terminal or just the display front.
When You Genuinely Need IP65
- Outdoor and semi-outdoor kiosks: rain, wind-driven spray, car wash adjacency
- Food service: screens near drinks, steam, fryers; daily aggressive wash-downs
- Healthcare and clean environments: frequent disinfection with liquid cleaners
- Industrial floors: coolant mist, dust, humid warehouses
When You Do Not
- Indoor retail, banking lobbies, hotels, offices with controlled environments — an IP54 front or even standard sealed PCAP glass is sufficient and cheaper
- Fully enclosed terminals where the display sits behind the kiosk’s own sealed window (the enclosure provides the IP rating, not the display)
Over-specifying costs real money at volume — IP65 fronts add cost to every unit across a 500-terminal rollout.
How to Verify a Supplier’s IP Claim
- Ask for the test report — serious factories test to IEC 60529 and share reports. No report, no rating.
- Ask what exactly was tested — front only or full unit, and at what production stage.
- Inspect the gasket design — continuous silicone gasket, proper compression groove, no adhesive-only sealing.
- Test your sample: run water over the front of the evaluation unit, then check for fogging behind the glass over the next 48 hours. Condensation reveals sealing failures that a quick spray hides.
IP65 and Touch: the Hidden Interaction
Water on a capacitive screen causes false touches unless the controller firmware handles it. If your application involves wet conditions, ask specifically about water rejection tuning — a well-tuned PCAP display ignores droplets and wet-finger touches, a poorly tuned one becomes unusable in the rain even if its IP rating is genuine.

Q1: Is IP65 enough for full outdoor use?
